JIDA Membership and Admission Procedure

Types of member

2- There are two main types of JIDA members: 1) full members, who have voting rights at general meetings, and can elect executives (board member or auditor); and 2) members who do not enjoy such rights, such as associate members, support members and student members.

 

Full membership

(joining fee: ¥30,000; annual membership fee: ¥36,000)   

(1) Members must have a minimum of 5 years industrial design-related practical* experience and be involved in one of the following 4 kinds of work

  1. Creative industrial design work
  2.  Promotional industrial design work
  3. Managerial or operational work related to industrial design
  4. Educational or research work related to industrial design
    Those living overseas must have Japanese nationality to become members.

(2) Those with qualifications equivalent to stipulation (1) of full members.

Note: Recommendations from two full members are required when applying for membership

Associate members

(joining fee: ¥15,000; annual membership fee: ¥18,000)

(1) These are members who do not have the sufficient number of years of practical experience as stipulated in the requirements for full membership
(2) Those with qualifications equivalent to stipulation (1) of associate members.

Note: Recommendations from two associate members, or one full member, are required when applying for membership. Associate members must switch to full members within six years.

Supporting members

(no joining fee. Annual membership contribution amount: ¥50,000; corporations and organizations must make a minimum of 2 contributions; for individuals, the minimum is one contribution)

(1) Corporations and organizations that have connections with industrial design
(2) Individuals that have connections with industrial design

Student members

(no joining fee; monthly fee of ¥500, to be paid 6 months in advance)

These are students who are enrolled at universities, graduate schools or technical colleges, and who have a broad interest in industrial design. Students enrolled in overseas universities, graduate schools or technical colleges must have Japanese nationality to become student members.
Note: Student members lose their membership eligibility once they cease to be students.

 

Membership privileges

Various kinds of information are provided, such as a free newsletter. Various other kinds of privileges are offered, such as discounts on the purchase of design materials, membership discounts on participation fees for various events, discounts in some hotels, and the use of the JIDA Gallery.
Individual business owners with full membership can join “The National Health Insurance Union of Artists” which offers the benefit of lower insurance premiums according to the make-up of their family.

 

Admission Procedure

The applications of those wishing to become full members, associate members or supporting members are reviewed by the Executive Board. As there are different application forms for each kind of member, please ask for the appropriate form at the executive office.

 

JIDA Design Museum Support Association

With the cooperation of Shinshūshinmachi in Nagano, the Museum Support Association exists so that the activities of the independently run Museum receive support and approval. Financial assistance is spent on some of the costs of the Museum’s wide-ranging operations and activities, such as the conservation of artefacts in their collection, their repair and restoration, new acquisitions, and exhibitions.

Those who wish to join the JIDA Design Museum Support Association will be sent various material and an application form once they have contacted us.
 
Costs:
Contribution amount for individuals: ¥5,000 per year (no limit on number of contribution)
Contribution amount for corporations: ¥50,000 per year (no limit on number of contributions)
